Message from the USAT Head Referee

TheHarbor Lights Triathlon is sanctioned by USA Triathlon, and the following USAT rules apply:

1. Position:

  • Ride on the right side of your lane.
  • Keep at least three bike lengths between you & the cyclist in front of you unless attempting to pass.
  • Pass on the left of the cyclist in front, never on the right.
  • Complete your pass within 15 seconds.
  • If passed, you must drop back 3 lengths to the rear, before attempting to re-pass.

Marshals will be on the course to ensure fairness in the competition.

  • There will be NO WARNINGS if you commit a foul. It's the responsibility of all athletes to understand the rules & avoid penalties.
  • All citations will be reviewed by the Head Referee who will decide if a penalty should be assessed. The Head Referee's ruling is final in the case of "position violations" and there are no protests or appeals.

The following violations are commonly cited by marshals:

  • Blocking - riding on the left side of the lane without passing.
  • Illegal Pass - passing on the right, or failing to drop back three bike lengths before re-passing.
  • Drafting - following a leading cyclist closer than three bike lengths and failing to pass or exit the draft zone within 15 seconds.
  • Position Violations carry a time penalty for each occurrence, if you are cited for three violations, you will be disqualified.

2. Bike Helmet Violations:

  • Always have the chinstrap of your helmet secured when you are on your bike (including transitions). The chin strap rule is easy to obey, but don't forget or you will be disqualified.

3. Course Etiquette:

  • Remember to treat all participants, volunteers & officials with courtesy & consideration. Failure to do so is called Un-sportsmanlike Conduct & you will be disqualified.

4. Transition Area Rules:

  • You must check your bike into Transition between 5:00 am and 6:45 am. Transition will close promptly at 6:45 am. Transition will not reopen for equipment pick-up until the last runner is out on the run course (approximately 9:30 am). All equipment must be picked up by 11:30 am!
  • No extra bike wheels, no extra wetsuits, no large duffel bags! These items will not be allowed in the transition area. Do not bring extra equipment! Don't leave anything in the transition area that you will need before transition reopens.
